"Out-of-office" measurements are recommended by Hypertension Canada for diagnosis and indicated when:

1. Fluctuating office readings occur
2. White Coat hypertension is suspected
3. Nocturnal hypertension is suspected
4. Masked hypertension is suspected 
5. To establish "dipper status" (<10% is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events)
6. Resistance hypertension is suspected
7. Pre-eclampsia

The data recorded while patients are ASLEEP and first thing in the morning provide insights that AWAKE measurements cannot.
